THE GIVING ANGELS is a nonprofit organization founded on the principles of compassion, action, and results for San Diego’s veterans.
With a sizable military community, San Diego faces an ongoing challenge in serving service members as they readjust to civilian life. According to Jack Harkins, the Vietnam era Marine veteran who chairs the United Veterans Council, there are about 240,000 veterans in San Diego. “Although the data on homelessness has been improving for veterans in San Diego … there are still roughly 1,380 San Diego veterans who are homeless,” said Jack. (That’s according to the January 2015 “point-in-time” count, when an army of volunteers attempts to count the homeless one morning.) Still, that’s down from 2009, when more than 2,100 veterans went without housing, said Cara Franke, the San Diego VA’s coordinator of health care for homeless veterans. There is hope.
By partnering with the San Diego Chocolate Festival, you will contribute to The Giving Angels’ efforts to make a difference in the lives of those who have served our country and are now homeless. They are doing this by feeding homeless veterans and providing education so they can get jobs. The Giving Angels believes if our veterans are fed and educated that they will be able to find jobs and get off the streets.
Not only will your partnership get homeless vets off the streets and into homes, but it will give them hope for a better future, a future where they know they are cared for and that their service of our country is not in vain.
We’d like you to be part of bringing people together for good: Good Times, Good Food and Good Will. What better way to give back than to enjoy a day of food and fun.
